BCS Chipper/Shredder (B-100)

The BCS chipper/shredder, known as the B-100, combines two machines on one PTO-driven rotor. A single high-carbon steel blade on a heavy flywheel chips branches up to 3 inches thick, while 28 swinging steel flails shred leaves, garden waste and soft prunings. It fits the 722 and every larger BCS tractor.

A Heavy Rotor for Momentum

The chipping blade is mounted on a 37 lb, half-inch-thick flywheel. BCS says its rotor is much heavier than those of competing chipper/shredders, and that extra mass stores momentum that carries tough limbs through the blade instead of stalling. The 28 shredding flails are hardened steel and reversible, so each can be turned to a fresh edge before replacement.

Screens and Rods-and-Rollers

Shredded material leaves through a discharge screen that sets the particle size. The B-100 comes with a 35 mm (1 3/8 inch) screen plus a set of rods-and-rollers, which replace the screen when shredding heavy, wet material and greatly reduce clogging. Screens in 15, 20, 25, 30 and 50 mm sizes are sold separately, and a rod and lynch pin make swapping them quick.

Ramial Chips for the Garden

Fresh chips from small saplings and branches, called ramial wood chips, are rich in nutrients. BCS suggests spreading them on paths between beds and working them in the following season with the rotary plow. Feed green wood butt-end first, let the flywheel recover speed between limbs, and wear eye and hearing protection. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

Which Tractor Suits It

The chipper runs on a 722 or 732, but long sessions favor the PowerSafe tractors from the 739 up, whose oil-cooled clutch BCS designed for high-torque work like this. Two adjustable casters move it to the brush pile and adjustable legs steady it in use.
