BCS 26″ Rear-Tine Tiller

For many market gardens the 26 inch tiller is the bed-preparation tool, and it fits more BCS tractors than any other tiller width, from the 722 through the 889. It narrows to 20 inches for cultivating, and it accepts the Precision Depth Roller for shallow seedbed work.

Fast Tines for a Fine Seedbed

In first gear BCS tines make 20 rotations for every turn of the tractor’s wheels, which BCS says is about 50 percent faster than competing brands. More bites per foot of travel means a finer, more even seedbed in fewer passes, and enough chopping action to work cover crops and crop residue straight back into the soil. Four depth settings reach a maximum tilled depth of 8 inches.

Which Tractors and What They Need

The 26 inch tiller mounts directly on the 722, 732 and 739. On the 749, 852 and 853 BCS calls for a quick hitch or PTO extension for clearance or engine balance, and on the 750 and 889 it needs the HD 2-bolt bushing. It is not charted for the 710, 718 or 779; the 779’s 27 inch track is wider than the tiller, so its tires would run outside the tilled strip.

Matching Bed Width to Tiller Width

Plan beds around the tiller you own. With a 26 inch tiller, a bed of about 26 or 52 inches is formed in one or two clean passes, while an odd width leaves a strip that needs a third pass or hand work. Narrowing the tiller to 20 inches for the season’s cultivating keeps tines out of the crop rows.

26 or 30 Inch

The 20 inch tiller suits the 710 to 732 and between-row work. The 30 inch tiller fits the 739 and larger tractors, including the 779, and narrows to 26 inches, so buyers with a 739 or 749 who want one tiller for both bed widths often choose it instead.
