Description

BCS 18″ Rear-Tine Tiller for the 710 and 718

The 18 inch tiller is the smallest BCS makes and is built for the two lightest tractors, the 710 and 718. It suits a home vegetable garden with narrow paths and small raised beds, where a wider tiller would spill into the walkways, and it gives those compact tractors a tool they can drive comfortably without added ballast.

Forward-Rotating Tines That Chop

BCS tines turn forward, in the same direction as the wheels, and chop through plant material rather than winding it up. With the tractor’s wheels controlling the pace and the weight balanced over them, the tiller does not “walk” across the surface, and the operator needs little or no downward pressure on the handlebars. A planar wedge at the center of the tine shaft breaks up the soil between the two tine sets, so there is no untilled strip left down the middle of the pass.

Small Gardens, Tight Turns

An 18 inch working width fits between established rows, along fence lines and inside small beds framed with boards. The tiller’s compact build makes it easy to swing round at the end of a row, which matters in a garden where every pass ends at a path or a gate. It can bust sod for a new bed, work in compost, and turn under spent plants at the end of the season.

18 Inch Tiller Details

  • Maximum tilling depth: 8″
  • Fits: Models 710 and 718, no accessories needed

Turning Under Garden Waste

Spent tomato vines and corn stalks till in more easily if they are cut or mown short first and left to wilt for a day or two; long, green stems take longer to break down and can bunch under the hood. Several shallow passes do more than one deep one. As a BCS attachment, the tiller carries three years of residential coverage and one year commercial.

Choosing a Width

The 20 inch tiller also fits the 710 and 718 (with a Bumper Weight Kit recommended) and can be widened to 26 inches later, which helps an owner who might move up to a 722 or 732. The 18 is the better fit where paths are narrow and the tractor will stay a 710 or 718. It does not mount on any tractor from the 722 up.
