Description

BCS 20″ Rear-Tine Tiller

The 20 inch tiller bridges BCS’s light and mid-size tractors. It fits the 710 and 718 and runs straight onto the 722 and 732, and it is the narrowest BCS tiller whose width can be changed, so it can grow with the garden or with a later tractor upgrade.

A Gear for Cultivating

Every BCS tractor has a second working gear intended for cultivating between growing plants. In that gear the tines turn 10 times for each turn of the wheels, which knocks out young weeds and leaves a loose dirt mulch on the surface without grinding the soil to powder. The 20 inch width slips between rows of beans, brassicas or garlic set at typical home-garden spacing, making it the natural mid-season weeding tool for a 710 to 732 owner.

Widening It Later

BCS sells an expansion kit that widens this tiller to 26 inches. That makes the 20 a sensible first tiller for a 722 or 732 owner who wants the narrow width now for between-row work and the option of a wider seedbed tool later, without buying a second tiller.

Fitment and Measurements

  • Working width: 20″, expandable to 26″ with a kit
  • Tractors: 722 and 732 directly; 710 and 718 with a Bumper Weight Kit recommended
  • Tilling depth: up to 8″
  • Compatible extras: hiller/furrower, transport wheels
  • Coverage: three years residential, one year commercial

Balancing a Light Tractor

On a 710 or 718, a 20 inch tiller puts enough weight behind the axle to lighten the handlebars and make the front end want to lift. BCS’s recommended Bumper Weight Kit adds weight at the front and keeps the tractor level, so the tiller works at its set depth and the operator is not leaning on the bars all afternoon.

Picking Between 18, 20 and 26

The 18 inch tiller is lighter for the 710 and 718 and suits narrow paths. The 26 inch is the step up for the 722 and larger tractors and accepts the Precision Depth Roller, which the 20 does not. The 20 does not fit the 739 or anything larger.
