BCS Rotary Plow for Breaking Ground and Building Beds
Known around the world by its nickname, the “Groundblaster,” the BCS rotary plow digs where a tiller struggles. Four spiral blades turn at 245 rpm on a vertical shaft and cut into almost any soil, including hard, stony ground that has never been broken, throwing the spoil out to the right side of the machine. It loosens soil up to 12 inches deep in one pass.
One Tool, Many Earth-Moving Jobs
Because it throws soil sideways rather than mixing it in place, the rotary plow can build things a tiller cannot. Several passes along the same line pile up a raised bed; working the other way digs a drainage ditch or swale. It also breaks new ground, power composts cover crops and hills crops. BCS points to it as excellent for maintaining semi-permanent raised beds, re-cutting the paths and throwing loose soil back up onto the bed each season.
Depth Wheel and Wear Parts
A wheel at the rear sets working depth and, raised to its highest position, becomes a transport wheel for moving between jobs. The plowshare tips are replaceable and four-way reversible, so each tip can be turned to a fresh edge three times before it needs replacing, which matters in stony soil.
Rotary Plow Fitment
- Model 779: no accessories required
- 739, 749, 852, 853: 5.5″ wheel extensions required
- 750 and 889: 5.5″ extensions plus the HD 2-bolt bushing
- 732: 5×10 wheel upgrade and 5.5″ extensions
- Not charted for the 710, 718 or 722
Rocky Ground
The rotary plow handles stony soil well, but large buried rocks still stop the blades abruptly. Walk a new site first and pull out anything that can be seen, start shallow with the depth wheel, and lower it a notch at a time on later passes. Turn the plowshare tips before they are worn round. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.
Rotary or Swivel Plow
The swivel rotary plow adds a second plowshare so soil can be thrown left or right, useful on hillsides and in small spaces, but it is heavier and charted only for the 749 and larger. For loosening without moving soil sideways, a tiller or the subsoiler is the better tool.
