BCS Bed Shaper Kit and Toolbar

Uniform raised beds make every later job easier, from seeding to mulching to weeding, and the BCS bed shaper is the simplest way to make them. After the soil has been prepared with a rear-tine tiller, one pass forms a bed roughly 3 inches high and 30 inches wide, the profile BCS’s plastic mulch layer is designed to cover.

What Is in the Kit

The kit contains two disc hillers, heavy-duty clamps, a drag chain and a 1 meter (39.37 inch) straight bar. The hillers can be placed anywhere along the bar. The clamps have serrated locking teeth that stop the disc shanks from rotating even under heavy soil load, a detail BCS describes as unique to its design. The chain, adjustable in width and hooked to each disc, drags behind to level the bed top.

Taller Beds, Hills and Furrows

Turn the discs inward and set them closer than 30 inches and the bed can rise to a maximum of about 6 inches. Reposition them and turn them outward, and the same discs hill plants or open planting furrows. The disc hillers and the 1 meter bar are also sold separately for growers building their own combinations.

Mounting and Tractor Needs

• Requires: Tool Carrier Kit to mount on the tractor
• Tractors: 732, 739, 749, 779, 852, 853; 750 and 889 also need the HD 2-bolt bushing
• Minimum wheel size: 5″ x 10″ x 19″
• Recommended: wheel weights or barbell weight hangers for traction
• For 30″ beds: 22″ wheel extensions, or 5.5″ plus 16″

Keeping Wheels in the Paths

The point of a permanent bed is that it never gets driven on. Fit wheel extensions so the tires run in the walkways on either side, and use the same track width for every pass that season, from shaping through cultivation. Compacting the bed once undoes much of the benefit. The bed shaper carries BCS’s three years residential and one year commercial attachment coverage.

Other Tools on the Same Carrier

The Tool Carrier Kit that holds the bed shaper also takes the V-cultivator, ridger, subsoiler and root digger. Growers who need taller beds or furrows in hard ground can turn to the rotary plow, which digs and throws soil instead of dragging it.
