BCS 21″ Power Harrow

The 21 inch power harrow brings the market gardener’s favorite seedbed tool to the mid-size BCS tractors. It is the only BCS power harrow charted for the 722 and 732, and it also runs on the 739, 749, 852 and 853. Made for BCS by Thivierge of Quebec, it prepares narrow beds and paths that a 30 inch harrow would overrun.

Stirring Instead of Mixing

A tiller’s tines rotate on a horizontal shaft and mix the soil layers together. A power harrow’s knives turn horizontally around vertical shafts, stirring the top few inches like an eggbeater. That leaves soil layers where they were, keeps a coarser particle size than tilling, and avoids lifting a fresh crop of buried weed seed to the surface, so fewer weeds germinate after planting.

Narrow Beds and Small Plots

A 21 inch working pass suits intensive home gardens and narrow production beds, and it is easy to steer between established plantings. Depth adjusts from zero to 5 inches, and a metal mesh roller behind the knives sets that depth precisely while firming and leveling the surface, which presses seed and soil together for better germination and helps mechanical seeders run true.

Working Moist, Not Wet

A power harrow does its best work in soil that crumbles in the hand. Too wet and the knives smear it and the roller packs it; too dry and the bed turns to dust. A quick squeeze test before harrowing decides the day. BCS’s attachment coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

Which Harrow Width

The 30 inch harrow is built around the common 30 inch bed and needs a 739 or larger tractor. The 32 inch is the widest option. For owners of a 722 or 732, the 21 inch is the only power harrow BCS lists.
