BCS 739 PS Two-Wheel Tractor with Honda GX340 Recoil Start

The 739 is the entry point to BCS’s PowerSafe range, and BCS counts it among its most popular tractors because it covers almost every attachment the company makes without the weight and cost of the 850 series. This recoil-start version uses a Honda GX340 (11 HP), differential drive with lockout, and the patented hydro-mechanical PowerSafe clutch.

What the PowerSafe Clutch Changes

The name refers to a design developed to meet European Union safety rules, but the practical difference is the clutch itself. It runs wet, cooled by circulating oil rather than air, so it stays cooler when driving high-torque implements such as the flail mower or chipper for hours at a time. BCS describes it as harder to abuse when several people share the tractor, more durable, and easier to operate. Residential owners get five years of clutch coverage on top of the standard terms.

A Third Working Speed

Standard BCS tractors have two working speeds and a transport gear; the 739 has three working speeds in each direction instead (0.78, 1.8 and 2.7 mph). Third gear is a comfortable walking pace when moving the tractor between jobs and a useful mowing speed with the brush, flail and lawn mowers and the dual action sickle bars. A parking brake is fitted, which helps when hitching on a slope.

Changing Clutch Oil on Schedule

A wet clutch depends on clean oil to cool it and to engage smoothly. Follow the service interval in the operator’s manual, use the specified oil, and check the level after any long session on a chipper or flail mower, when the clutch has worked hardest. Beyond the clutch term, the transmission carries lifetime residential and five-year commercial coverage, the tractor three years residential and one year commercial; Honda covers the engine.

Choosing a PowerSafe Model

The 739 is charted for the 30 inch tiller, all three power harrows, the 28 inch two-stage snow blower, the 48 inch power sweeper and the pressure washer. It is not charted for the 33 inch two-stage blower, the 32 inch brush mower, the 35 inch flail or the 82 inch dual action bar; those start at the 749. The electric-start 739 adds key starting with a recoil backup.
