BCS 53″ Sickle Bar Mower, Complete With Transmission

The 53 inch sickle bar is the widest single action bar BCS makes, and the 732 is the smallest tractor charted for it. It is the cutter for larger hay plots, field margins and reed beds, sold as a complete mower with the bar and its oil-bath transmission together. BCS reports one watershed group using its sickle bars to clear invasive common reeds standing 16 feet tall.

Tall, Tough Growth

Because the knife cuts at the base rather than chopping, height does not slow a sickle bar the way it slows a rotary mower. Tall grass, reeds and saplings up to 1.5 inches thick go down in one pass and lie flat. That makes the 53 inch bar useful for clearing overgrown ground and for cutting hay in quantity.

Commercial-Grade Efficiency

Sickle bars need little power and use less fuel than other mowers, which BCS points to as a reason they suit commercial operations. On a 739 or larger, the PowerSafe clutch and three working speeds let the operator match pace to the crop. Skids adjust the cutting height up to 3 inches.

Transporting a Wide Bar

Four and a half feet of exposed knife needs care between fields. Fit the knife guard or cover before moving, lift the bar to clear gateposts, and never transport with the PTO engaged. On a slope, the sickle bar mower weight kit from BCS helps counterbalance a wide bar. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

Single or Dual Action

Below 53 inches, the 45 inch bar fits the 722 as well. Above it, the dual action bars from 59 to 82 inches cut faster with less vibration on the larger tractors, and the versions without fingers handle woody growth better.
