Description
BCS 779 PS Hydrostatic Tractor, Honda GX390 Electric Start
A hydrostatic two-wheel tractor is at its best on work that keeps changing direction, and the electric-start 779 is set up for exactly that: key starting with a recoil backup, stepless speed and direction from one handlebar lever, a PowerSafe clutch, and steering brakes on both wheels for heavy front-mounted tools such as the 35 inch flail mower.
Trimming, Banks and Back-and-Forth Work
Mowing under fence lines, bushes and low branches means pushing in and pulling back repeatedly. On the 779 that motion is just the hydro lever moved forward and back, with no shuttle and no clutch. On a steep pond bank, the hydrostatic’s dynamic neutral lets the operator stop and reverse at any point without the mower freewheeling downhill, which BCS highlights as one of the strongest reasons to choose hydro over gears.
What It Runs
The 779 takes the 30 inch tiller, the rotary plow with no extra wheel kit, the swivel rotary plow with a Bumper Weight Kit, the 30 and 32 inch power harrows (each with the Quick Hitch Bushing and a Bumper Weight Kit), both two-stage snow blowers, the 24, 30 and 35 inch flail mowers and the RollerBlade flail, plus every sickle and dual action bar, the 30 and 40 inch sickles with a quick hitch or PTO extension. The 26 and 32 inch brush mowers and the HD combo mower need a quick hitch or PTO extension. It is not charted for the 18, 20 or 26 inch tillers, the 21 inch harrow or brush mower, the 22 inch lawn mower, or the potato planter.

Warming Up Before Heavy Work
Hydrostatic fluid is thick when cold, and the drive feels sluggish until it warms. On cold mornings, especially before snow blowing, let the engine run for a few minutes and move the tractor gently before loading it with a blower or flail. Residential owners get lifetime transmission coverage and five years on the PowerSafe clutch; commercial users get five years on the transmission. The tractor carries three years residential and one year commercial, and the engine is under Honda’s warranty.
Choosing a Hydrostatic BCS
The recoil 779 is identical apart from starting and costs less. The 889 StarGate offers one simplified speed range, a lighter alloy transmission, an integrated heavy-duty quick hitch and a narrower stance that suits the 26 inch tiller. The geared 749 remains the economical alternative.
