Scag Patriot 61 Inch Zero-Turn with 26 HP Vanguard MID BLOCK

This configuration fits a 26 horsepower Briggs Vanguard MID BLOCK to the 61 inch Patriot. The MID BLOCK designation places it a step below the BIG BLOCK engines used on Scag’s heavier commercial machines, and it is the only Vanguard in the Patriot range.

MID BLOCK Against BIG BLOCK

The two are different engine families rather than different tunes. BIG BLOCK units appear on the Turf Tiger, Cheetah and V-Ride where sustained high output is the requirement; the MID BLOCK is built for the duty an intermediate commercial machine imposes. For a Patriot buyer the practical consequence is that this engine is matched to the machine rather than borrowed from a heavier one.

  • Cutting width: 61 inches, Hero cutter deck
  • Engine: Vanguard MID BLOCK, 26 HP
  • Transaxle: Hydro-Gear ZT-3400
  • Forward speed: up to 10 mph
  • Brakes: Ausco disc, foot-operated parking brake
  • Fuel capacity: 6.5 gallons

The Early Oil Change Is the Important One

Manufacturers specify a short first oil interval because break-in puts more metal into the oil than the whole of the rest of the engine’s life will. Running past it, or treating it as optional because the oil still looks clean, leaves that debris circulating. It is the cheapest single thing an owner can do for an engine and the one most often skipped on a machine bought mid-season.

Clear Under the Seat Now and Then

The space under the seat collects clippings, and on a machine with the battery and wiring in that area it holds moisture against terminals and connectors. Lifting the seat a few times a season and blowing the area out takes a minute and prevents the intermittent electrical faults that are miserable to diagnose once they start.

The Vanguard Option at 61 Inches

This sits near the top of the range on price. The SPZ-61H-27CX offers more power for less from a Briggs CXi, and the SPZ-61H-25CV matches that price with a Kohler. The SPZ-61H-23FX is the Kawasaki at a similar figure to this machine.
