Description

Scag Patriot 52 Inch Zero-Turn with 25 HP Kohler Confidant

At its price this is the least expensive Patriot Scag builds, pairing the 52 inch Hero deck with a 25 horsepower Kohler Confidant. It is the cheapest route to a commercially rated Scag rider.

Where This Machine Sits Against the Freedom Z

The natural comparison is downward rather than upward. A Freedom Z at 52 inches costs less again but gives up the foldable roll bar, the larger tyres and the suspension seat that define the Patriot. For a buyer weighing the two, the question is whether those three things matter, and for anyone spending real hours on the machine they generally do.

  • Cutting width: 52 inches, Hero cutter deck
  • Engine: Kohler Confidant, 25 HP
  • Roll bar: foldable
  • Seat: torsion-spring suspension with armrests
  • Fuel capacity: 6.5 gallons
  • Forward speed: up to 8.5 mph

The Seat Switch Is a Consumable

The operator presence switch under the seat gets sat on several thousand times a season and eventually starts cutting the engine when it should not, usually on rough ground where the operator lifts slightly. The temptation is to bypass it. The correct answer is a replacement switch, which is inexpensive, because the fault it is signalling will otherwise get worse until the machine is unusable anyway.

Fuel Filters Are Cheap and Forgotten

An inline fuel filter costs very little and is almost never changed, because nothing about it announces that it needs to be. A partially blocked one produces an engine that runs well at low load and stumbles under a heavy cut, which gets blamed on the carburetor. Replacing it annually removes the variable entirely.

The Entry Point to the Range

Every other 52 inch Patriot costs more. The SPZ-52H-23CV and SPZ-52H-27CX are the next step up, and the SPZ-52H-22FX carries the premium Kawasaki. If the budget will not stretch, look at the Freedom Z rather than compromising on deck width here.
