Honda EM5000SX 5,000 Watt Home Backup Generator with Electric Start

The EM5000SX is a generator designed around the house rather than the job site. Honda pitches it at the circuits that matter in an outage, the refrigerator, the furnace blower and the well pump, and gives it the features that make an emergency easier: electric start with recoil backup, a standard wheel kit, covered front-panel outlets and remote start and stop through Honda’s My Generator app.

Getting a Well Pump Running

A well pump draws far more current for a moment at start-up than it does once spinning. The EM5000SX’s iAVR system lets the 389 cc iGX390 engine deliver 7,000 watts for up to ten seconds to cover that surge, then settles back to 4,500 watts rated and 5,000 maximum. A 120/240 V selector puts the full output onto the 120 volt receptacles when the house load is all 120 volt.

Remote Start from the Kitchen

The My Generator app connects over Bluetooth to start and stop the machine, monitor its output and remind the owner of service. It means checking the generator during a storm does not require going outside. CO-MINDER adds carbon monoxide monitoring with automatic shutdown, and two of the duplex outlets are GFCI protected.

Keep the Start Battery Ready

The starting battery comes included, but a battery that sits all summer can be flat by the first ice storm. The 12 volt DC output can top up an automotive battery with the optional cord; for the generator’s own battery, a maintainer between storms is the simplest insurance.

Picking the Right EM

The EM6500SX adds 1,000 rated watts for homes running a freezer and a furnace together. The EB5000 shares this engine and output but trades electric start and Bluetooth for a job-site specification. The EM5000SX is not sold in California.
