BCS Ridger Drag Implement

The BCS ridger is a simple, unpowered shovel with adjustable wings that moves loose soil into ridges and furrows. It works in ground that has already been prepared by a tiller, pushing that soil to the height and position the grower wants, and it fits every BCS tractor from the 710 to the 889 on a Tool Carrier Kit.

Ridges and Furrows After Tilling

Drawn through a tilled bed, the ridger opens a furrow for planting and banks the soil to either side. Later in the season the same tool pulls soil up around potatoes or leeks. The wings adjust to set the furrow width, opening to a span of up to 21 inches, and the working height is set by a bolt on the tool carrier.

Two Ridgers on a Straight Bar

Mount two ridgers on BCS’s 1 meter straight bar and they work a pair of rows in one pass. Spaced apart, they leave a strip of undisturbed soil between them, which becomes a walkway between two rows of hilled crops. That arrangement doubles the work done per pass for a small cost.

Ridger Specifications and Needs

  • Wingspan: adjustable up to 21″
  • Mounting: slides onto any BCS Tool Carrier, height set by bolt
  • Required: Tool Carrier Kit
  • Recommended: wheel weights; straight bar for multiple ridgers
  • Tractors: all BCS models; HD 2-bolt bushing on the 750 and 889

Getting Traction With a Drag Tool

Any implement that is dragged rather than driven depends on the tractor’s tires to pull it through the soil. On a light tractor, the wheels can spin before the ridger reaches full depth. Wheel weights or barbell hangers fix that, and working in slightly moist soil rather than dry, loose dust helps the ridge hold its shape. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

Hand-Pinned or Powered Ridging

The hiller/furrower pins behind a tiller and needs no Tool Carrier. The PTO-driven power ridger works front-mounted on the 722 and up, cutting and throwing its own soil. The drag ridger is the least expensive of the three and the only one that pairs on a straight bar.
