BCS PTO Log Splitter

The BCS log splitter is a 20 ton hydraulic splitter driven by the tractor, built by Wallenstein, a Canadian maker of log splitters. Hitched to a BCS, it is driven to the wood pile on its own off-road tires, then powered from the PTO, so there is no separate engine to start, fuel or maintain.

Twenty Tons From the PTO

A 16 gpm two-stage hydraulic pump feeds a 4 by 24 inch cylinder, and BCS describes the 20 ton rating as conservative. It splits logs up to 24 inches long. The stroke takes about 7 seconds, and the wedge returns by itself in another 7, so the operator can position the next log hands-free while it retracts.

Horizontal or Vertical

The beam works horizontally for logs that can be lifted onto it, or vertically for heavy rounds that are easier to roll into place than to lift. Large tires and a wide stance keep the splitter stable and easy to steer, and the quality of its components makes it suitable for commercial firewood work. An optional 4-way wedge splits each log into four pieces per stroke.

Splitting Safely

Work on level ground, keep one person at the controls only, and never steady a log with a hand near the wedge. Split from the edge of a round rather than its center when a log will not open, and look for knots, which are where wedges stall. As a BCS attachment the splitter carries three years residential and one year commercial coverage.

Choosing a Tractor for Firewood

The 718 is the smallest BCS charted for the splitter. Owners of the 853 can use its rear transport gear to tow the BCS utility trailer from the woodlot, then swap to the splitter at the pile, making it a practical firewood pairing.
