BCS Dethatcher (Scarifier)

Thatch, the layer of dead grass, leaves and stems that builds up at the base of turf, keeps water and air from reaching roots and weakens a lawn. The BCS dethatcher, also called a scarifier, removes large amounts of moss and thatch in a single pass. It is designed by Camon, a British landscape equipment maker, and BCS calls it an essential tool for landscapers.

48 Blades on Three Rotors

The front-mounted dethatcher cuts a 26 inch path with 48 spring-loaded, free-swinging blades on three vertically rotating rods. Each blade is fish-tail shaped for long life and reversible to double its working life, and the blades are offset from rod to rod so every pass covers the full width.

Even Depth Across the Lawn

A full-width roller at the front sets blade depth and keeps it even, and a swivel joint near the PTO connection lets the whole unit float to follow ground contours. That combination means the blades bite consistently across humps and hollows instead of scalping high spots and missing low ones.

When to Dethatch

Dethatch when the grass is actively growing so it recovers quickly: early autumn or spring for cool-season lawns, late spring for warm-season turf. Mow a little shorter first, make one pass, rake or sweep up the debris, and overseed thin patches right away while the soil surface is open. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

Other Lawn Renovation Tools

The power sweeper can lift light thatch and leaves and windrow them for pickup, and the single belt hay rake doubles as a lawn dethatcher at its lowest setting, but neither replaces this machine for heavy moss and compacted thatch.
