Description

Scag Patriot 52 Inch Zero-Turn with 24 HP Kawasaki FT

This configuration puts a 24 horsepower Kawasaki FT Series engine into the 52 inch Patriot. It sits between the FX machine and the cheaper Kohler and Briggs options on both price and output.

Braking on a Commercial Rider

The Patriot uses a foot-operated parking brake acting on Ausco disc brakes, which means the operator can engage it without taking a hand off the steering controls. That sounds minor until a machine needs stopping on a slope with a trailer ramp in front of it. A hand-lever brake requires letting go of a control at exactly the moment nobody wants to.

  • Cutting width: 52 inches, Hero cutter deck
  • Engine: Kawasaki FT Series, 24 HP
  • Brakes: Ausco disc, foot-operated parking brake
  • Transaxle: Hydro-Gear ZT-3100
  • Fuel capacity: 6.5 gallons
  • Weight: approximately 907 to 911 lbs

Brake Adjustment Is a Wear Item

Disc brakes on a mower are adjusted rather than self-adjusting, and they lose bite gradually enough that an operator compensates without noticing. The test is whether the machine holds on the steepest slope it works, checked deliberately rather than discovered. Adjustment is in the manual and takes minutes; finding out it was needed costs considerably more.

Let a Hot Engine Idle Before Shutting It Down

Shutting a hard-worked air-cooled engine off immediately traps heat with no airflow over the fins, and the hottest components cook the oil around them. A minute at idle before switching off lets temperatures even out. It costs nothing, and over years it is one of the clearer differences between engines that reach high hours and engines that do not.

Where the FT Sits at 52 Inches

Against the SPZ-52H-22FX this is more power for less money from a different Kawasaki family, so parts commonality rather than capability decides between them. The SPZ-52H-23CV and SPZ-52H-27CX undercut both, and the SPZ-52H-25ZT is the cheapest way into a Patriot.
