BCS 732 Two-Wheel Tractor with Kohler CH395 Recoil Start

The 732 is the least expensive way into a BCS with differential drive, and for most buyers that axle is the whole story. Each wheel turns independently, so the tractor pivots at a headland instead of being dragged round by the operator. This recoil-start version pairs that axle with a Kohler Command Pro CH395 and the all-gear transmission BCS uses across its standard range.

Why the Differential Matters

Turning a straight-axle tractor means scrubbing one wheel across the ground. The 732’s differential removes that effort, which shows up most in tight places: hoop houses, fenced beds and the end of every mowing pass. When both wheels need to pull, for example across a steep slope or on packed snow, a pull back on a lever locks the differential into positive drive, and pushing it forward returns the tractor to free turning.

A Long List of Tools

The 732 is the first BCS charted for the 53 inch sickle bar, the dethatcher, the moldboard plow, the rotary plow and the bed shaper. Several of these need preparation. The rotary plow wants the 5×10 wheel upgrade plus 5.5 inch extensions; the moldboard plow wants the 5×10 wheels and wheel weights; the 24 inch flail and the 21 and 26 inch brush mowers need the 5×10 upgrade too, which BCS offers as an option when the tractor is bought. The 26 inch tiller, chipper/shredder and 40 inch snow blade mount directly.

732 Recoil Figures

  • Engine: Kohler Command Pro CH395, pull start
  • Axle: differential drive with on-demand lockout
  • Gearbox: all gear, two working speeds each direction
  • Working speeds: 0.68 and 1.6 mph
  • Transport: 7.6 mph in rear-mount mode
  • Tires: 4x10x18″ standard; 5x10x19″ upgrade available
  • Weight: about 275 lbs with a 26″ tiller
  • Clutch: spring-loaded double cone

Using the Diff Lock Sparingly

The lock is for traction, not for everyday driving. Engage it before starting across a slope or onto ice, keep it engaged only as long as one wheel is slipping, and release it before turning, since a locked axle fights the operator at every corner and loads the gears. The transmission is covered for life in residential use and for five years commercially, the tractor for three years at home or one year commercially, and Kohler covers the engine.

Where the 732 Recoil Fits

The 722 costs less but keeps a straight axle and cannot run the 53 inch bar or the plows. The electric-start 732 is the same machine with key starting and a recoil backup. Buyers who expect to run a flail mower or chipper for long hours, or want a third working speed, should compare the 739 PS and its oil-cooled PowerSafe clutch.
