Scag Turf Tiger II 61 Inch Diesel Zero-Turn with 25 HP Kubota

This is the diesel Turf Tiger II at 61 inches, powered by a liquid-cooled 25 horsepower Kubota. At its price it is among the most expensive machines in Scag’s catalog, and the reasoning behind it is entirely different from the petrol machines.

Torque Rather Than Horsepower

Twenty-five horsepower looks modest against a 40 horsepower Vanguard, and comparing the two on that number misses the point. A diesel makes its effort lower in the rev range and holds it, which is why this machine does not slow in material that makes a petrol engine work. Ground speed is 10 mph rather than 12, but the speed it actually sustains through heavy growth is closer to its ceiling.

  • Cutting width: 61 inches, Velocity Plus cutter deck
  • Engine: Kubota diesel, 25 HP, liquid-cooled
  • Forward speed: up to 10 mph
  • Fuel capacity: 12 gallons
  • Frame: double-tube steel
  • Cutting height: 1.5 to 6 inches in quarter-inch increments

Water in Diesel Is the Thing to Watch

Diesel systems tolerate almost everything except water, which collects from condensation in a part-filled tank and destroys injection components quietly and expensively. Draining the separator on schedule, and filling the tank at the end of a day rather than leaving it half empty overnight, are the two habits that keep a diesel fuel system healthy for the fifteen years these engines are capable of.

Whether Diesel Is Worth the Premium

It is, for high-hour municipal and estate fleets that keep machines a decade or more and value fuel economy and engine life over purchase price. It is not, for a contractor replacing mowers every four or five years, where the STTII-61V-40BV-EFI does the same work for several thousand less. The STTII-72V-25KBD is the same engine on a wider deck.
