Scag Turf Tiger II 61 Inch Zero-Turn with 38 HP Kohler EFI

This is the Kohler-powered 61 inch Turf Tiger II, a fuel-injected 38 horsepower engine behind the driveshaft-driven Velocity Plus deck. It sits between the entry Vanguard and the 40 horsepower machines on both price and output.

Clutch Sizing Tells You What a Deck Demands

The Turf Tiger runs an Ogura clutch rated to 350 ft lb on its Briggs configurations, against 250 ft lb on the Tiger Cat and 150 on the smaller V-Rides. That figure is a direct measure of how much rotating mass the deck puts through the engagement every time the blades are switched on. It is also why a driveshaft-driven deck needs a heavier clutch than a belt one.

  • Cutting width: 61 inches, Velocity Plus cutter deck
  • Engine: Kohler EFI, 38 HP
  • Deck drive: driveshaft
  • Fuel capacity: 12 gallons
  • Cutting height: 1.5 to 6 inches in quarter-inch increments
  • Forward speed: up to 12 mph

Engage the Blades at Low Revs

An electric clutch takes its whole working life of wear in the fraction of a second it engages, and engaging at full throttle multiplies that. Dropping to idle before switching the deck on, every time, costs nothing and roughly doubles the service life of the most expensive small component on the machine. Operators who have never been told this almost universally do the opposite.

Driveshaft Universals Need Looking At

A driveshaft removes the long deck belt but introduces universal joints, and those are a wear item nobody inspects because the shaft is out of sight under the machine. Grabbing the shaft and feeling for play at each joint takes seconds on a raised deck, and a joint caught with slight movement is a cheap part where one left until it knocks is not.

Placing the Kohler at 61 Inches

The STTII-61V-40BV-EFI is the Vanguard at 40 horsepower for a modest step up and is the volume configuration in the range. The STTII-61V-33BV is the carbureted entry machine, and the STTII-61V-31DFI trades horsepower for liquid cooling at a higher price.
