Scag SWZ 36 Inch Fixed-Deck Hydro-Drive Walk-Behind Mower

The SWZ is Scag’s fixed-deck hydro walk-behind, using separate pumps and motors rather than integrated transaxles. At 36 inches it runs a 14 horsepower Kawasaki FS behind an Advantage cutter deck.

Separate Pumps and Motors

Where the SWZT uses sealed ZT-2800 transaxles, the SWZ drives through dual 10 cc Hydro-Gear pumps and 12 ci Parker motors as separate components. That is the heavier-duty arrangement, rated for more sustained work, and it is a large part of why the SWZ costs substantially more than the SWZT at comparable widths.

Adjust-A-Trac Lives on the Machine

Hydro walk-behinds drift out of tracking over time, pulling gently to one side and forcing the operator to correct constantly. Scag mounts the adjustment tool on the engine deck so the fix happens in the field in a minute rather than waiting for a workshop visit. Machines that pull are usually machines whose operator did not know the tool was there.

Hydraulic Oil on a Separate Pump System

With individual pumps and motors there are more connections than on a sealed transaxle, and more places for a slow weep to start. Wiping the area clean and checking a week later distinguishes old residue from an active leak, and catching a fitting early is considerably cheaper than a pump.

Check It Cold

Levels read high on hot oil, so a cold reading first thing is the one to act on.

Fixed Deck or Floating

The SWZT-36H-14FS is the floating-deck alternative at this width for considerably less. Within the SWZ range, the 48 and 52 inch machines move to Velocity Plus decks with electric start.
