Description

Scag Cheetah II 72 Inch Rear Discharge with 40 HP Vanguard BIG BLOCK EFI

This combines the two things that most restrict where a mower can work, a 72 inch deck and rear discharge, into one machine aimed at large sites that also carry discharge restrictions. It runs a fuel-injected 40 horsepower Vanguard BIG BLOCK.

Large Sites With Things You Cannot Throw Clippings At

The combination sounds contradictory until you picture the ground it suits: municipal cemeteries with wide grass avenues, campus quadrangles ringed by parked cars, airfield margins, and the open sections of parks bordered by paths and benches. These are properties big enough to justify the widest deck and sensitive enough that side discharge would create work rather than save it.

  • Cutting width: 72 inches, rear-discharge Velocity Plus deck
  • Engine: Vanguard BIG BLOCK EFI, 40 HP
  • Discharge: rearward, no side chute
  • Ground speed: 12 mph low range, 16 mph high range
  • Fuel capacity: 13 gallons
  • Weight: 1,399 to 1,427 lbs

Why the Big Engine Is Not Optional Here

Scag offers this deck only with the 40 horsepower engine, and the reason is that a rear-discharge deck concentrates all its material into one path instead of flinging it sideways. Moving 72 inches of cut grass rearward through a single opening takes more to do well than dispersing it over a wide arc. The output is a requirement of the deck design rather than a specification upgrade.

Cleaning a Rear Discharge Deck

Material packs differently under a rear-discharge deck, collecting toward the rear opening rather than spreading toward a side chute. It builds faster and it chokes the airflow sooner, so the underside wants scraping more often than a side-discharge machine would need. Left to dry hard it becomes a chisel job and takes cut quality down with it in the meantime.

Where This Machine Has No Substitute

If you need both width and rear discharge, this and its Blackout twin the SCZII-72RD-40BV-EFI-SS are the only options. Give up width and the SCZII-61RD-38CV-EFI and SCZII-61RD-38FX-EFI cover the same restriction at 61 inches for less. Give up the restriction and the SCZII-72V-40BV-EFI is the same engine and width with a side chute.
