Scag SW 36 Inch Belt-Drive Walk-Behind Mower

The 36 inch SW belt-drive walk-behind with a 14 horsepower Kawasaki FS, using an Advantage cutter deck. It sits just above the 32 inch machine on price for a meaningful increase in coverage.

Five Speeds Rather Than Infinite

The Peerless transmission gives five forward speeds selected with a lever, which means an operator picks a gear for the conditions and stays in it rather than modulating constantly. On open ground that is entirely adequate and arguably less tiring. Around obstacles a hydrostatic machine is easier, because speed changes happen without a hand leaving the controls.

  • Cutting width: 36 inches, Advantage cutter deck
  • Engine: Kawasaki FS Series, 14 HP
  • Drive: five-speed Peerless transmission
  • Deck construction: tri-plate with replaceable trim-side wear pad
  • Fuel capacity: 5.5 gallons
  • Handlebars: three adjustable positions

The Trim-Side Wear Pad Is Replaceable

Walk-behinds spend their lives against fences, walls and kerbs, and the trim side of the deck takes all of it. Scag fits a replaceable wear pad there rather than letting the deck shell absorb the damage, which on a machine used the way these are is the difference between a consumable and a rebuild.

Learn the Gear for Each Property

With five fixed speeds rather than infinite adjustment, the useful habit is working out which gear suits each regular property and starting in it rather than changing repeatedly. Crews that do this find the machine noticeably less tiring, because gear changes on a walk-behind interrupt the rhythm of the work.

Second Gear Covers Most Trimming

Around obstacles and along edges a lower gear gives better control than slowing a faster one by dragging on the grips, which wears the operator out.

Choosing an SW Width

The SW-32-14FS is narrower for tighter access, and the SW-48V-14FS moves to a Velocity Plus deck on the same engine. For hydrostatic drive at similar widths, the SWZT range is the alternative.
