Description

Scag Patriot 52 Inch Zero-Turn with 23 HP Kohler Command PRO

This is the Kohler-powered 52 inch Patriot, running a carbureted Command PRO at 23 horsepower. It undercuts the Kawasaki version while offering slightly more output, which makes it the value pick among the mainstream configurations.

A Deck Built to a Different Brief

The Hero cutter deck on the Patriot is a dual-plate weldment with a reinforcement plate at the spindles, rather than the tri-plate Velocity Plus deck used on Scag’s heavier machines. It is lighter, cheaper and entirely adequate for the duty this machine is built for. What it is not is a deck intended to absorb repeated contact with kerbs and tree roots across a full commercial week.

  • Cutting width: 52 inches, Hero cutter deck
  • Engine: Kohler Command PRO, 23 HP, carbureted
  • Deck construction: dual-plate with spindle reinforcement
  • Spindles: aluminium housings, sealed ball bearings
  • Fuel capacity: 6.5 gallons
  • Forward speed: up to 8.5 mph

Nothing to Grease on the Deck

The aluminium spindle housings run sealed ball bearings, so unlike the cast-iron greaseable spindles on Scag’s commercial decks there is nothing to service and nothing to forget. The trade is that a failed bearing means a replacement rather than a repack. On a machine at this duty cycle that point is far enough away to be a fair exchange for never having to think about it.

Idler Pulleys Fail Before Belts Do

A belt that keeps failing is usually reporting a problem somewhere else, and the commonest culprit is an idler pulley whose bearing has stiffened. Spinning each idler by hand with the belt off takes a minute and finds it. Replacing belt after belt without checking is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive habit.

Value Across the 52 Inch Patriots

The SPZ-52H-22FX is the Kawasaki at a premium, and the SPZ-52H-27CX matches this price with 27 horsepower from a Briggs CXi. The SPZ-52H-25ZT is cheaper again. At this width the engine choice moves the price more than it moves the result.
