Description

Scag Jackal 40 Inch Stand-On Mini Skid Steer with Kohler Diesel

The wide-frame Jackal with a 24.7 horsepower Kohler KSD1403 diesel. At 40 inches across the tracks it trades gate access for stability and flotation.

Changing Track Width in the Field

The Jackal takes 7 inch tracks as standard and 9 inch as an option, and the change is designed to be made on site rather than in a workshop. That flexibility is worth more than it sounds: narrow tracks for a dry morning on firm ground and access, wide tracks in the afternoon when the same site has turned soft. Most owners fit one set and never revisit it, which wastes the capability.

  • Tracking width: 40 inches
  • Engine: Kohler KSD1403 diesel, 24.7 HP
  • Track: dual 7 inch standard, 9 inch optional, field changeable
  • Ground pressure: 5.5 psi on standard tracks
  • Rated operating capacity: 1,125 lbs
  • Auxiliary hydraulics: up to 15 GPM at 3,000 psi

Track Tension Is a Maintenance Item

Rubber tracks stretch as they bed in and then continue slowly through their life. A track run loose will derail on a turn, usually at the least convenient moment, and one run over-tight wears its rollers and idlers prematurely. Checking tension against the manual’s figure at the intervals given, rather than by eye, is what keeps a set of tracks reaching its full life.

Turn on the Move Where the Surface Allows

A counter-rotating turn on the spot scrubs rubber off the tracks and tears whatever is underneath. Making turns while travelling forward, even gently, roughly doubles track life and leaves turf intact. On hard standing it matters less, and on grass it is the difference between a clean job and a repair.

The Wide Frame Jackals

The SJ1125-W-40-25KBD is the Kubota at the same price and the SJ1125-W-40-25YMT the Yanmar at a premium. If access rather than stability is your constraint, the 35.5 inch SJ1125-N-34-25KSD is this engine on the narrow frame.
