BCS 30″ Power Harrow for 30-Inch Market Garden Beds

BCS calls the 30 inch power harrow its best unit yet for market gardeners, and the reason is fit: its 28 inch working width finishes the widely used 30 inch bed in a single pass. At 171 lbs it is lighter and more maneuverable than earlier versions, and it is built by Thivierge of Quebec, a harrow many market gardeners prefer for seedbed preparation.

Design Changes That Matter

Spring-loaded metal side skirts keep the stirred soil inside the working width instead of spilling it into the path, and a shortened PTO connection pulls the harrow’s center of gravity closer to the tractor, making it easier to lift and turn. Horizontally turning knives stir rather than mix, preserving soil structure and leaving buried weed seed where it is.

The Josephine Lever

An adjusting lever BCS calls the “Josephine” makes row ends quick. Pull it to raise the harrow into the transport position for the turn, then return it to the same notch to restore the working depth exactly. Depth runs from zero to 5 inches, set by the metal mesh roller that also levels and gently firms the bed for seeders.

Bed Routine With a Harrow

Many growers use the harrow as the last step before seeding: a pass to incorporate compost, a few days for a flush of weeds to germinate, then a very shallow pass to kill them just before sowing. Keeping that final pass shallow is what prevents a new batch of weed seed coming up. Coverage is three years residential and one year commercial.

21, 30 or 32 Inch

The 21 inch harrow is the choice for the 722 and 732, which cannot run this one. The 32 inch harrow covers a wider strip on the same tractors. The 30 inch is the size to buy when the farm is laid out in 30 inch beds.
